Porcelain Collection

The Porcelain Collection is considered the most significant and extensive ceramic special collection globally, with around 20,000 exhibits. Its foundation can be traced back to Augustus the Strong, who jokingly referred to his preference for the precious and fragile material as “maladie de porcelaine,” the porcelain disease. An excellent collection of early Meissen porcelain allows for tracing the development of this art form from its invention in 1708 to the late 18th century through works of the highest quality. Equally impressive is the collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain exhibited in the East Asia Gallery. Today, the most magnificent pieces are displayed in the beautiful interior architecture of the Zwinger, offering a view of the baroque Zwinger courtyard.
